The F/A-18 structure and surfaces contain what type of materials?
Graphite and carbon/epoxy composite materials.
When does composite material present a hazard?
Once it is broken and the fiber has been exposed.
Can composite material fibers injure you and how?
Yes, the fibers will embed into exposed skin and become difficult to remove.
Is it harmful to inhale graphite composite fibers caused by aircraft fires/or aircraft material damage may be harmful to personnel?
Yes, it may be harmful.
What precautions must be observed when handling composite materials?
You must wear a respirator, goggles, and close weave cotton gloves when handling exposed or damaged material.
Should you use extreme caution with toolboxes and heavy parts with sharp edges around aircraft structures?
Yes. You should also use protective shoe coverings while walking on top of the aircraft when practical to avoid damaging the composite material through-out the aircraft structure.
There are STEP, NO STEP areas on top of the aircraft. Which areas do you need to avoid stepping on?
Avoid stepping on the leading edge flaps, trailing edge flaps, horizontal stabilizers, ailerons, and radome surfaces.
What areas on top of the aircraft can you step on?
The areas that you can step on normally have non-skid on the surface. The wings are also considered walkways.
What is the purpose of the ground safety pins?
To safety lock the nose and main landing gear in the down position while on the deck.
What safety measures must be observed prior to towing an aircraft to prevent damage to aircraft?
Minimum structural access door must be installed, radome must be closed and secured, hydraulic brake pressure has to be 2900 psi minimum, ensure doors 68 left and right are closed or removed, all support equipment must be removed from aircraft and all obstacles need to be clear from towing area.
What are the dangers of opening the canopy of the aircraft after a long flight or when the aircraft has been on the deck and exposed to prolonged high winds.
High voltage (100,000 volts) static electrical charge may build up and be stored in the windshield and canopy during flight or when the aircraft is on deck and exposed to high winds.
How is static build up in the windshield/canopy discharged.
Through the use of a static charge removal kit.
What safety measures are put in place to protect aircraft openings and protruding surfaces.
Various aircraft plugs and covers are used to prevent physical and environmental damage and foreign object intrusion.
On the F/A-18 aircraft what is used to secure it?
There are 12 tie-down rings used to secure the aircraft. There are also 2 tie-down rings that can be added from the jacking beam.
Where are the original 12 tie-down rings located on the aircraft?
One and two are on the nose landing gear. Three is on the forward fuselage in door 16. Four, six, and eight are on the left main landing gear. Five, seven, and nine are on right main landing gear. Ten and eleven are under the wings in doors 107L and 107R. Twelve is located on the aft fuselage in door 164.
