Block 6 Flashcards
When do we start cross-country instruction?
Right away from the very first lesson because the POINT of flying is the get from point A to point B
What subject areas should you cover with a student in preparation for cross-country flight? (name atleast 5)
- Aircraft performance
- Weight and Balance
- Wx theory
- Publications(charts, etc)
- Airspace regulations
- Radio communications
- 3 Navigational Methods
- Flight planning/calculations WITH E6B
What Experiences should you provide the student on dual cross-country flights? (6)
- Teaching calculation of ATE/GS/etc. on E6B
- Go to NEW airports and w/ different communications
- Varying navigation methods
- Emergencies (lost, diversion)
- Open/close flight plans
- Refueling the a/c
What are some common student ERRORS you will see when teaching cross-country operations? (4)
- Locating and operating at new airports
- Over reliance on GPS
- GS checks on E6B
- Efficiency
What are the standards for cross-country (navigation) for Private Pilot?
Within 3nm of planned route
+/-5 min to checkpoints
+/-200 altitude!
What are the required experiences for xc flight under Part 61 and Part 141?
Both:
- 3 hours dual
- Night xc
Part 61:
- 5 hours solo
- 150nm trip with 3 points and 1 segment over 50nm
Part 141:
- Solo xc flight
- 100nm trip with 3 points and 1 segment over 50nm
Why do we need to teach wx services to primary pilots?
- FAR requirement
- Performance
- Safety
- Student must know how to obtain, analyze and recognize critical wx situations before soloing
- Use wx reports and forecasts to make competent go/no go decisions
What AREAS of weather services do primary pilots have to know?
??? METARs TAFs Ceilings/visibility AIRMETs SIGMETs
What are common ERRORS associated with weather services?
- Don’t know the 4 types of wx briefings
- Dont know the sources
- Trouble reading reports/forecasts
- Can’t put MEANING to what they are reading
- Unsure on how to make a go/no-go decision
What are standards for wx KNOWLEDGE of primary pilots?
Applicant demonstrates understanding of:
- Acceptable sources of wx for flight planning
- Required sources of wx for planning
- Meteorology applicable to the flight such as wind, turbulence, clouds, precipitation, icing levels etc)
What AREAS of weather services do student pilots seeking cross country privileges have to know?
??? METARs TAFs Ceilings/visibility AIRMETs SIGMETs
What is SMS? What are the 4 components?
- A general aviation term used to describe a safety management system where everyone is involved
1. Policy
2. Risk Management
3. Assurance
4. Promotion - Trying to become PREDICTIVE
Explain the Assurance component of SMS
Gathering data to see if we can change things to mitigate the risks better
Explain the Promotion component of SMS
Raising awareness and promoting a Safety Culture
What is FOQA?
- Flight Operational Quality Assurance
- Approved program for airlines (Part 121)
- VOLUNTARY to improve safety through PROACTIVE use of Flight Data
What are the 4 steps of FOQA?
- Data Recording/Retrieval
- Data Processing/Analysis
- Corrective Action
- Monitoring
* a continuous loop*
Explain Aviation Safety Action Programs (ASAP).
Why was ASAP created?
- So pilots can report anonymously things they saw or did that are a safety concern
- Info is used by review committee to determine changes that need to be made and what reports will be involved
- Cost human and fiscal resources
Who does the TSA Alien Flight Student Program (AFSP) apply to?
- Alien seeking flight training inside or outside the US for a US airmen cert
- In a/c 12,500lbs or less
What are the steps involved with the AFSP Process? (6) VNVELAA
- VISA
- Notify the school
- Valid email
- Create login on TSA AFSP website
- Apply for training
- Wait for school so acknowledge request
What must a US citizen do based on the“US Citizens Seeking Flight Training” TSA requirements? (4)
- Proof of citizenship
- Logbook/record keeping
- Security awareness training
- Initial security awareness training (w/in 60 days of hiring)
What must a Flight Training Provider do based on TSA requirements before any flight instruction can take place? (2)
- Security awareness
2. Record keeping
What should you and your students do to support the Airport Watch Program?
- Be on the lookout for odd things
- Be wary of people asking specific questions
- IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING
Explain the PRINCIPLES of Risk Management (4)
- Accept no unnecessary risks
- Make risk decisions at appropriate level
- Accept risk when it benefits/out weighs the cost
- Integrate risk management into planning
Explain the Risk Management PROCESS (6 Steps)
- ID the hazard
- Assess
- Analyze
- Make control Decisions
- Implement Controls
- Supervise and review
What is PAVE and what kind of model is it
- Risk Assessment model
1. Pilot
2. Aircraft
3. EnVironment
4. External Pressures
What is DECIDE and what kind of model is it
- DECISION making model
1. Detect
2. Estimate
3. Choose
4. ID
5. Do
6. Evaluate
What are 2 other ADM models used?
- 3P (perceive, process, perform) - CARE (Consequences, alternatives, reality, external pressures) - TEAM (Transfer, eliminate, accept, and mitigate risk) - OODA (observe, orient, decide, act)
Explain the 5 hazardous attitudes
Anti-Authority: "Don't tell me" Impulsive: "Do it quickly" Invulnerability: "It won't happen to me" Macho: "I can do it" Resignation: "What's the point"
Explain the methods of teaching ADM to your students? (5)
- Let them make decisions
- Give real life scenarios
- Online courses
- Think out loud so they can observe you thought process
- Dual flights into controlled environments
