What are the 3 objectives of First Aid?
- Maintain Breathing
- Stop bleeding
- Prevent or treat for shock
What are the 11 basic wounds?
- Fractures (open/closed)
- Sucking chest wound
- Abdominal evisceration
- Massive hemorrhage with amputation
- Laceration
- Electrical shock
- Smoke inhalation
- Burns
- Hypothermia
- Heat stess
- Puncture wound
Describe 1st degree burn
Red skin, mild pain
Describe 2nd degree burn
Red skin, blisters, severe pain
Describe 3rd degree burn
Charred black skin/tissue. May or may not be painful due to nerve damage
What are the three methods of controlling bleeding?
Direct pressure
Pressure points
Tourniquet
Describe the basic treatment for suicide gesture or attempt
Do not leave patient alone.
Keep them from inflicting harm to themself
Refer to trained psychiatric professional
Why and when would a cold pack be used on a sprain?
For the first 24-48 hours to reduce swelling and to control internal hemorrhage
Why and when would a hot pack be used on a sprain?
Applied after swelling stops only for short periods 15 to 30 mins to promote healing and reduce swelling.
What is dislocation?
When a bone is forcibly removed from its joint.
What are Sprains?
Injuries to the ligaments and soft tissues that support a joint.
