Bleeding Disorders Flashcards
Give an example of a vascular acquired primary haemostatic problem?
Henoch-Schonlein Purpura
One cause of failure of platelet formation (primary haemostasis) is reduced platelet function. Give some acquired causes of this.
drugs e.g. aspirin/NSAIDs
Renal failure
Thrombocytopenia can be caused by destruction of platelets or failure or production. Give 3 causes of Destruction of platelets (acquired).
Coagulopathy e.g. Disseminated intravascular coagulation
Autoimmune e.g. Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP)
Hypersplenism
What is the pattern of inheritance for hereditary VwF deficiency?
autosomal dominant
What is the commonest cause of primary haemostatic failure?
thrombocytopenia (usually acquired)
Does Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation tend to be hereditary or acquired?
acquired
Is haemophilia hereditary or acquired?
hereditary
What two bleeding disorder problems are caused by disseminated intravascular coagulation?
primary, due to destruction of platelets (thrombocytopenia)
Secondary, due to multiple clotting factor deficiency
How is haemophilia inherited?
x linked
What are the two types of haemophilia?
A - problem with factor VIII
B - problem with factor IX
Which is the more common haemophilia type?
A (5 times more common)
How does liver failure cause failure of formation of a fibrin clot?
reduced coagulation factor synthesis
