What drugs are used to treat bipolar
A
Lithium - mood stabiliser
Antipsychotic drugs in mania - reduce gradually - olanzapine, quetiapine and risperidone
Benzodiazepines - not used for long term - use for short term due to risk of dependence
Valproate - used in treatment and prophylaxis of manic episodes
Carbamazepine - high risk drug - prevents recurrence of acute episodes in patients unresponsive to lithium

If unresponsive to lithium, what can be used?
A
Carbamazepine but it is a high risk drug so not often used in practice that freely
