biosensors quiz ch9,10,11 Flashcards
What are non invasive neural prosthetic examples?
EEG, ECoG, GSR, fMRI
What are invasive neural prosthetics?
implanted devices that can directly target single neurons for action potentials, can help with damaged CNS
What are two types of cells that the CNS consists of?
neural cells and dense glial cells (astrocytes)
What makes it difficult for drugs to react with brain or CNS?
the blood brain barrier (BBB) and glial cells make it difficult for drugs to access
How can damage and scar tissue response be minimalized?
smaller in dimension and sharper in morphology for the implanted device
What is important for neurons to do? What happens if they don’t?
attach to an external surface, if they do not they may experience cell death or apoptosis
how do cells typically connect to a biocompatible substrate?
they increase their attached area, they have greater cell viability compared to cells interacting with unsuitable or toxic
What are the measures of biocompatibility?
Cell morphology, viability
how are cleft’s stabilized?
by a protein molecule
