BIOSECURITY Flashcards
what is biosecurity?
all measures taken to minimise the risk of pests and diseases entering and establishing in new environments
What is risk?
a combination of likelihood and the impact
What are the three major impacts of an incursion?
- economic
- environmental
- social (psychological)
how much money have red imported fire ants cost Australia
$200 million
why do we need biosecurity
To reduce impact on production, economic, environmental and socials.
To maintain pest-free status - stability
define bioterrorism
the deliberate introduction of a pest or disease, particularly to cause harm
define biosafety
safety within a laboratory or when dealing with a pest or disease organism - involves protocols and PPE
What is the biosecurity continuum process
- Pre-border - certifications to cross border, analysis, prohibitions
- border (arrival) - inspections, quarantines, phytosanitary treatment
- post-border (establishment + spread + impact):
1 surveillance/eradication
2 containment and quarantine
3 pest management (when cannot
be eradicated completely)
What does biosecurity aid in?
- food safety
- plant life and health
- animal life and health
What factors influence biosecurity
climate change - increase distribution of pests/vectors
globalisation + tourism (movement of people/disease)
Trade
What is the invasion curve
a useful tool to visualise where to best direct EFFORT and INVESTMENT during different stages of an incursion
Who is responsible for biosecurity?
Everyone, but main sectors:
government, industry, community
