Biomes Lab Flashcards
1
Q
How are terrestrial biomes classified?
A
- average temperature/climate
- precipitation levels
2
Q
How are aquatic biomes classified?
A
- freshwater or marine environments
- salinity levels
3
Q
Taiga (Boreal Forest)
A
- long/cold/dry winters, warm/moist summers
- nutrient poor soil
- plants: coniferous trees
- animals: lynx, moose, horned owl
4
Q
Temperate Deciduous Forest
A
- four distinct seasons, moderate/seasonal temperature
- high nutrient soils
- steady precipitation
- plants: trees lose leaves in winter
- animals: turkey, squirrel, black bear
5
Q
Tropical Rainforest
A
- most biodiverse terrestrial biome
- nutrient poor soil
- highly stratified
- hot/wet year-round, even wetter summers
- animals: toucan, sloth, howler monkey
6
Q
Chaparral
A
- high risk of fire
- rocky soil
- moderate temperatures, distinct wet/dry seasons
- plants: dominated by hardy shrubs
- animals: coyote, mountain lion, roadrunner (birds that run fast)
7
Q
Temperate Grassland
A
- aka veldt/pampas
- deep, high nutrient soils
- almost no precipitation
- warm temperatures
- plants: tall, lush grass
- animals: prairie dog, bison, grouse
8
Q
Savanna (tropical grasslands)
A
- hot year round, distinct wet/dry seasons
- animals: large herds of herbivores, cheetah, giraffe, ostrich
9
Q
Desert
A
- little rainfall, almost no precipitation
- warm temperatures
- nutrient poor soil
- plants: sparse vegetation, cacti
- animals: kangaroo rat, rattlesnake, scorpion
10
Q
Tundra
A
- very cold, cold & colder seasons
- low precipitation
- plants: mostly treeless w/ permafrost
- animals: snowy owl, caribou, arctic fox
11
Q
Coral Reef
A
- most diverse aquatic biome
- many symbiotic relationships
- animals: sea anemone, clownfish, white tip shark
- e.g. great barrier, miami terrace, chagos archipelago
12
Q
Estuary
A
- most productive aquatic biome
- mix of salt & freshwater
- animals: blue crab, oyster, flounder
- e.g. chesapeake bay, pamlico sound, geiranger fjord
13
Q
Coastal Wetland
A
- greatly influenced by tides
- protect against storms
- plants: halophytic (adapted to live in salt water/saline conditions), mangrove tree
- animals: raccoon, blue heron
- e.g. saltmarsh, mangrove swamp, pocosin
14
Q
Stream/River
A
- flowing freshwater, often starts in mountains
- animals: otter, beaver, trout
- e.g. amazon, mississippi, nile
15
Q
Lake/Pond
A
- lentic (still, unmoving) freshwater
- often highly stratified
- animals: painted turtle, leopard frog, carp
- e.g. baikal, malawi, superior, bond
