biomes Flashcards
is a biome type that occurs roughly within the latitudes 28 degrees north or south of the equator
Tropical Rainforest
are coniferous or broadleaf forests that occur in the zone and receive high rainfall.
Temperate Rainforest
most notable because they go through four seasons. Leaves change color in autumn, fall off in the winter, and grow back in the spring; this adaptation allows plants to survive cold winters.
Temperate Deciduous Forest
also known as boreal forest or snow forest
Taiga
a hot, seasonally dry grassland with scattered trees
Savanna
hot summers and cold winters. Summer temperatures can be well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit
Temperate Grassland
vegetation consisting chiefly of tangled shrubs and thorny bushes.
Chaparral
area of land where little precipitation occurs and consequently living conditions are hostile for plant and animal life.
Desert
where the tree growth is hindered by low temperatures and short growing seasons
Tundra
a body of water shallow enough to support rooted plants
Lakes and Ponds
place where the plants that make up the area covered in water are primarily woody plants or trees.
Marsh and Swamps
natural flowing watercourse
Rivers
where freshwater rivers and streams flow into the ocean, mixing with the seawater.
Estuaries
rainforests of the oceans.
Coral Reefs
r pelagic zone, consists of everything in the ocean outside of coastal areas.
Open Ocean
near shore area where sunlight penetrates all the way to the sediment and allows aquatic plants
Littoral Zone
ecological region at the lowest level of a body of water such as an ocean or a lake
Benthic Zone
plants, animals, or pathogens that are non-native to the area
Invasive Species
which has been categorized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature
Endangered Species
a widespread and rapid decrease in the amount of life on Earth.
Mass Extinction
