Arthropod Flashcards
Arthropod
An arthropod is an invertebrate animal having an exoskeleton, a segmented body, and jointed appendages. Arthropods form the phylum Arthropoda, and include the insects, arachnids, myriapods, and crustaceans.
Molting
shed old feathers, hair, or skin, or an old shell, to make way for a new growth.
Pheromones
are naturally occurring odorless substances the fertile body excretes externally, conveying an airborne signal that provides information to, and triggers responses from, the opposite sex of the same species.
Thorax
the part of the body of a mammal between the neck and the abdomen, including the cavity enclosed by the ribs, breastbone, and dorsal vertebrae, and containing the chief organs of circulation and respiration; the chest.
Abdomen
the part of the body of a vertebrate containing the digestive organs; the belly.
Cephalothorax
is a tagma of various arthropods, comprising the head and the thorax fused together, as distinct from the abdomen behind.
Exoskeleton
is the external skeleton that supports and protects an animal’s body
Cheliped
is a pincer-like organ terminating certain limbs of some arthropods.
Malpighean tubes
Malpighian tubules are slender tubes normally found in the posterior regions of arthropod alimentary canals. Each tubule consists of a single layer of cells that is closed off at the distal end with the proximal end joining the alimentary canal at the junction between the midgut and hindgut.
Arachnid
Arachnids are a class of joint-legged invertebrate animals, in the subphylum Chelicerata. All arachnids have eight legs, although the front pair of legs in some species has converted to a sensory
Spiders
Spiders are air-breathing arthropods that have eight legs and chelicerae with fangs that inject venom. They are the largest order of arachnids and rank seventh in total species diversity among all other orders of organisms
Metamorphosis
the process of transformation from an immature form to an adult form in two or more distinct stages
Crustaceans
Crustaceans form a very large group of arthropods, usually treated as a subphylum, which includes such familiar animals as crabs, lobsters, crayfish, shrimp, krill and barnacles.
Insects
Insects are a class of invertebrates within the arthropod phylum that have a chitinous exoskeleton, a three-part body, three pairs of jointed legs, compound eyes and one pair of antennae
Antennae
either of a pair of long, thin sensory appendages on the heads of insects, crustaceans, and some other arthropods
Scorpions
Scorpions are predatory arachnids of the order Scorpiones.
Swimmerets
Swimmerets are normally found on the first five abdominal segments and typically terminate in paired oarlike branches. They function primarily for carrying the eggs in females and are usually adapted for swimming. Also called pleopod
Green glands
coxal gland. …antennal glands or maxillary glands, depending on whether they open at the base of the antennae or at the maxillae. If the tubule adjacent to the excretory pore is green, the gland is called a green gland
Woodtick
they suck blood
Grasshopper
Grasshoppers are insects of the order Orthoptera, suborder Caelifera. They are sometimes referred to as short-horned grasshoppers to distinguish them from the katydids which have much longer antennae.
Butterfly
Butterflies are part of the class of insects in the order Lepidoptera, along with the moths. Adult butterflies have large, often brightly coloured wings, and conspicuous, fluttering flight.
Housefly
Musca domestica, is a fly of the suborder Cyclorrhapha. It is the most common of all domestic flie
Mosquito
Mosquitoes are small, midge-like flies which comprise the family Culicidae. Females of most species are ectoparasites, whose tube-like mouthparts pierce the hosts’ skin to consume blood.
Crab
Crabs are decapod crustaceans of the infraorder Brachyura, which typically have a very short projecting “tail”, usually entirely hidden under the thorax
Lobster
Clawed lobsters comprise a family of large marine crustaceans. They have long bodies with muscular tails, and live in crevices or burrows on the sea floor
