Biomes Flashcards
Biotic Factor
Living or once living organisms within an ecosystem (tree, turtle, driftwood, dead leaves)
Biomes
a region of the world characterized by life, environment and climate
Biodiversity
- the variety of life, including plant and animal species
Climate Change
Long-term pattern change in the average weather patterns across global, local and regional scales
Commensalism
A symbiotic relationship where one species benefits and the other is neither helped nor harmed (A sloth hiding in a tree)
Community
is made up of all of the populations of different species that live and interact in an area
Ecosystem
An area where abiotic and biotic organisms live together in a particular environment
Global Warming -
Long-term heating of the Earth’s surface due mainly to the increasing concentrations of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere (this is an example of climate change)
Habitat
the place within an ecosystem that an organism lives
Invasive Species
a species that is introduced to a non-native environment that often causes ecological or economic harm
Keystone Species
a species on which other species in an ecosystem largely depend
Mutualism -
when both species benefit from the relationship (clown fish & sea anemone)
Ocean Acidification -
Reduction in the pH level of the ocean over an extended period of time, caused primarily by an increase in carbon dioxide
Parasitism -
when a species lives or eats off another host (often resulting in a harmful impact to host) - (horses and flies)
Population
a group of individuals of the same species that live in the same place at the same time
Symbiotic Relationship -
A long-term relationship between two organisms of different species (Ex. Mutualistic, Parasitic, Commensalism)
Grassland-
- open regions dominated by grass, warm, dry climate
-Savannas (tropical):
Closer to the equator some trees/ shrubs (a kind of grassland)
-Temperate:
no trees or rubs, less, water then savannas (a kind of grass land)
Tundra-
very difficult to live in, low precipitation lowest temperature of the 5 biomes
*Arctic and Alpine tundra
*simple vegetation with low biodiversity
*frozen layer under soil (permafrost)
Freshwater
-water surrounded by land
-lakes, ponds, rivers
Marine:
-75% of the earth’s surface
-ocean, coral reef, and estuaries
Desert-
dry areas little resin fall, 20% of the earth’s surface
-Low biodiversity
-can be hot or cold
Forest-
dominated by trees, much of the world’s biodiversity
*tropical (rainforests)
*temperate (4seasons)
*Boreal - Coldest
