Biomedical Therapy Flashcards
What is Biomedical Therapy
It deals with there being a biological issue and using drugs and medical procedures to treat issues
What is Psychopharmacology
This is the study of how psychotropic drugs(used to treat psychological disorders) affect mental processes and behavior
What are Antianxiety Drugs (Anxiolytic)
This is short term thing used to treat anxiety, for long term use antidepressant
What is an Antidepressant Drug
This is used to elevate mood by affecting neurotransmitters like serotonin which is linked to depression
Types of Antidepressant Drugs
- SSRI
- NDRI
- SNRI
What are Mood-Stabilizing Drugs
THis is used to treat a combination of manic episodes and depression, which are characteristics of bipolar disorder, it helps reduce dramatic mood swings
What are Stimulants
This is used to stimulate the central nervous system, it stops the absorption of dopamine and norepinephrine, it allows more stimulation in the brain
Antipsychotic Drugs
Used to treat symptoms of schizophrenia and extreme cases of bipolar
Assessing Psychotropic Drugs
These drugs are prescribed after a medical diagnosis and has side effects
Electroconvulsive Therapy (ETC)
This is using electric current to trigger a brain seizure, it is used to treat depression
What is Psychosurgery/Neurosurgery
This is dramatic and least used biomedical intervention for changing behaviors, it involves removing brain tissue, it is irreversible
What is Deep Brain Stimulation
This is used to treat sever cases of depression, a thin wire is placed in the area of your brain associated with your depression
What is Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)
This is an alternative to ECT, it is used to treat depression with minimal side effects, pulsating coils are warped over the prefrontal region of your brain
Assessing Psychotropic Drugs
These can only treat symptoms, they do not cure the illness, you can get addicted to them
