Biomechanics: Momentum and Inertia Flashcards
1
Q
Define momentum
A
- Momentum is the product of mass x velocity.
- P=MV
2
Q
Keyword to describe momentum??
A
- Momentum is constant.
- The momentum of an object will never change if it is left alone.
3
Q
How can we change momentum??
A
- Change in momentum will only happen as a result of the change in velocity.
- This will happen through the acceleration or deceleration caused by an external force.
- The greater the velocity the greater the momentum.
4
Q
Define Inertia
A
- Inertia is an objects resistance to change, its state of motion.
5
Q
What is ‘state of motion’?
A
- State of motion can either be stationary or moving.
6
Q
What causes inertia to increase?
A
- As mass increases so does inertia.
- The larger the mass of an object the harder it is to change it’s state of motion.
7
Q
How do we change an objects state?
A
- In order to change an objects state of motion an external force is needed.
- The greater the mass, the greater the force is needed.
