Biology term 2 must know terms Flashcards
Angiosperms
Plants that produce flowers–flowering plants
Autotroph
An organism that makes its own food without needing other organisms
Consumers
Organisms that need to eat to obtain energy. They do not make their own food
Cross-Fertilization
Fusion of male and female gametes from different individuals of the same species
Dermal Tissue
Outermost layer of plants, analogous to the skin of animals
Eukaryote
Organisms whose bodies are made up of eukaryotic cells
Fertilization
Process in sexual reproduction that involves the union of male and female gametes
Food Chain
Sequence of organisms in an ecosystem that eat and are eaten by other organisms
Germination
Process by which an organism grows from a seed or a spore
Ground Tissue
Type of plant tissue that is not found in the dermal or vascular tissues
Gymnosperms
Produce seeds that are not contained with an ovary or fruit
Heterotroph
Cannot make its own food by carbon fixation
Meristematic Tissue
A type of plant tissue that contains undifferentiated cells that can divide and differentiate into various types of specialized cells
Non-Vascular
Any species of a plant which does not have specialized vascular tissues
Phloem
Specialized food conducting tissue in plants that transports soluble organic compounds, such as amino acids and sugars, from the photosynthesized part of the plant (leaves) to non-photosynthesized parts (stem, flowers, buds, fruits, roots)
