Biology of moving teeth Flashcards
bone remodeling is mediated by what?
The PDL
What is the bioelectric theory?
Force and bending of alveolar bone causes currents of electrons causes bone regeneration.
What is the pressure-tension theory?
Diameter of blood vessels is increased on tension side (opposite movement), and compressed on pressure side. Causes response in cells.
What are the cellular stages of tooth movement?
- Tissue compressed and blood flow reduced on compression side
- release of ceondary messengers
- activation of cells (osteoclasts, fibroblasts…)
What happens when you move teeth too fast?
- Pain
- Cell necrosis
- Less tooth movement
- Collapsed blood vessels.
Undermided resporption leads to what? Through what mechanisms?
Delay in tooth movement.
- Total obliteration of blood vessels in PDL
- Recruitment of osteoclasts from distant sites
- Need to remove thick underside of lamina dura.
What occurs when force is at center of resistance? away?
Center= Bodily movement Away= Rotational (spinning)
What is the moment of the force?
Measure of the tendency to rotate an object around some point.
What is a couple? What does it cause?
2 forces equal in magnitude but opposite in direction. Causes pure rotation of tooth.
Control of root position during movement requires what 2 things?
- A force to move the tooth
- Couple to produce necessary counterbalancing moment for control of root position.
What is moment of the force?
Moment created when a force is applied to crown of the tooth.
What is moment of the couple?
Counterbalancing moment generated by the force in a couple in clinical ortho.
What is tipping?
Single force applied to crown that tips crown
What is translation?
Force applied at center of resistance to move crown and root in same direction.
Which is easier, tipping or translation?
Translation needs twice as much pressure than tipping.
