Biology Chapter 8 Human Activity on Earth Flashcards
What type of reaction is photosynthesis
Endothermic
What is the word equation for photosynthesis
Carbon Dioxide + Water—–> Glucose + Oxygen
What 2 things are needed to allow photosynthesis to happen
Light
Chlorophyll
Where are chlorophyll found and what colour are they
Found in chloroplast
Green
Testing the leaf for starch - what is the indicator used and what is the result of presence of starch
Iodine
Turns yellow brown to blue black
Why is the plant destarched before placing under light
To remove any starch
so any starch formed is due to experiment set up
If leaf was part white and part green (variegated) what would you expect the result to be if tested it for starch
The green parts go blue black as chlorophyll needed for photosynthesis
White parts stay yellow brown in iodine
What is the source of energy for ecosystems
Sun
What do the arrows in a food chain represent
Transfer of energy
What does a food chain always start with
A producer (plant) as they make own food
What is a consumer
An organism that gets energy from eating other things
What is an abiotic factor
A non living factor
It will affect an environment eg temperature, water, oxygen availability
What is a biotic factor
A living factor
This will affect organisms - eg predator or prey, grazers that eat grass
How are lichen good indicators of air pollution
They are a biotic factor (a living organism)
They will die if levels of pollution in air increase so can be monitored to see how many of them there are
What resources will plants compete for
Light, water, space, minerals in soil
What resources will animals compete for
Water, food, territory, mate
What is a competitive invasive species
A plant or animal that will invade a new area and out compete the natural species present
eg grey squirrels were introduced and were able to outcompete red squirrels as bigger and ate different foods so survived
what is biodiversity
The number of different species of plants and animals found in an area
How can agriculture (farming) have a positive impact on biodiversity
1 - replant hedges (more food and habitats for animals)
2 have margins at side of crop fields that are left to go wild - they attract different plants and therefore insects/animals
3 - use fertilizers efficiently - so certain plants do not outcompete other plants
How can land use management have a positive impact on biodiversity
use brown field (have had building) or industrial land to build housing on rather than using green fields
How can fishing have a positive impact on biodiversity
- protect fish stocks by setting quotas on number of fish allowed to be caught
- have net size bigger so smaller fish can pass through (they can then grow to maturity and reproduce so keep population)
- ban fishing of certain fish species (that are at risk of extinction)
How can nature reserves have a positive impact on biodiversity
nature reserve eg peatlands park, bog meadows in belfast
They preserve habitats that are at risk of becoming extinct - therefore provide correct environment for survival of certain plants or animals
Role of international treaties
To agree how to reduce global warming
Give two features that all competitive invasive species have in common.
- spread rapidly when introduced into a region
- outcompete native species
- they are almost always introduced to a country by humans
