Biology Chapter 2 Cells Flashcards
What are the main parts of an animal cell
Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane
What are the main parts of a plant cell
Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, chloroplasts, cell wall and vacuole
What is the function of the nucleus
Contains genetic information on chromosomes
controls cell activities
What is the function of the cell membrane
Allows materials into and out of cell - is selectively permeable
What is the function of the cytoplasm
Site for chemical reactions
What is the function of chloroplasts
contain chlorophyll
absorb light and make food in photosynthesis
What is the function of cell wall
Support
Made of cellulose
What is the function of vacuole
Contains cell sap
provide support
How do you make a slide of onion cells
Thin section of onion tissue and place on slide
add drop of iodine
Slowly lower cover slip so no air bubbles form
Place on stage
Use lowest objective lens to get wider field of view
Focus using Coarse and Fine focusing knob
What is the stain used for cheek cells/animal cells
Methylene blue
Why are stains used when preparing slides of cells
Makes it easier to see parts of the cell
What is a tissue
Made up of similar cells that do a particular function eg muscle cells make muscle tissue
What is an organ
Made up of different tissues that do a particular function eg heart made up of muscle, blood and nervous tissue
What is an organ system
Made up of different organs that do a particular function eg circulatory system made up of heart, blood and blood vessels
What are stem cells
Simple cells that have the ability to divide into cells of the same type
