Biology: Chapter 2 Flashcards
Characteristics of Ribosomes
- tiny structure in the cell (seen with electron microscope)
- proteins are formed using instruction from DNA
What is the function of nuclues?
-contains genetic materials
- controls the cell’s activity
- determines what protein is made in cell
What is the looks and function of cytoplasm?
-clear jelly
-contains dissolved substances
-place where metabolic reaction happens
What is the function of Mitochondria? What does it produce?
- site for aerobic reactions
- how energy is released from glucose
- produces oxygen
What is the function of Ribosomes?
-site for protein synthesis using instruction from DNA
What is plant’s cell wall made out of? what is its fuction?
Cellulose,
Cell wall is
-strong layer
-which protects and support the cell, preventing it from bursting when it has too much water
What is the function of vacuole?
-cell sap which stores water
- presses outwards on the cell to keep its shape
What is the function of Chloroplast?
- absorbs energy from sunlight and is used to make food by photosynthesis
What is the function of cell membrane?
- controls what enters and leaves the cell
What cell moves dust particles out of the body? Where is it found?
Ciliated cell, found in trachea and the lining of bronchi
What cell is found in the leaves of a flowering plant? What does it do?
Palisade Mesophyll Cell, carries out photosynthesis
Describe the structure and function of Red Blood Cell
-has no nucleus
- transport oxygen
How many micrometer is 1 mm?
1000 micrometer = 1 mm
Define the term tissue
a group of cells that work together to perform a particular function
Where can you find root hair cell? what is its function?
- near the tips of the roots of flowering plant
- obsorbs water and mineral ions
