Biology Flashcards
what’s the nervous system made up of?
brain and spinal cord
what’s the step-by-step process of the central nervous system?
1-nerves in our body send info via the spinal cord to the brain
2-the brain then processes this info and sends a message to the body through the spinal cord
what do neurons do?
neurons in the brain pass messages along through electrical impulses/neurotransmitters
-neurotransmitters are released and cross the synaptic gap to be picked up by receptor sites
what do dendrites do?
pick up signals m sense organs/other neurons
what does the cell body do?
collects dendrites into one stronger signal
what does the axon do?
carries the electrical nerve impulse down the length of the cell
what does the myelin sheath do?
acts as insulation to speed up the conduction of the impulse and keep it travelling in 1 direction
what’s the axon terminal?
where the synapse passes to the next neuron
what are the 5 steps in the synaptic transmission and action potential?
1-action potential comes down axon to terminal
2-vesicles full of neurotransmitters move to the edge of the cell and release neurotransmitter into the gap
3-neurotransmitter drifts across the gap and bonds to a receptor (lock and key mechanism)
4-when enough are filled then a new action potential starts on the next cell
5-any used/excess neurotransmitters are reabsorbed to the pre-synaptic membrane
what are neurotransmitters?
chemicals used to carry messages across the synaptic gap
different ones do different things
