Biology 30 - The Brain Flashcards
1
Q
Cerebrum
A
- Seat of higher level thinking and problem solving
2
Q
Cerebral Cortex
A
- Outer most part of cerebrum; composed of grey matter
- Folded to increase surface area
- Right and left cerebral cortex (left side of brain controls right side of body and vice versa)
3
Q
Cerebral Hemisphere
A
- Four lobes
4
Q
Frontal Lobe
A
- Intellectual activity and speech
- Contains motor cortex (voluntary motor movement)
5
Q
Temporal Lobe
A
- Hearing
6
Q
Parietal Lobe
A
- Speech, Communication, sensory
- TTTPP (taste, touch, temperature, pain, pressure)
7
Q
Occipital Lobe
A
- Vision
8
Q
Corpus Callosum
A
- Connects left and right hemispheres
- Deep groove between the left and right sides of the brain
9
Q
Cerebellum
A
- Controls involuntary motor movement (balance, coordination and fine muscle movements)
- Receives sensory information from the semicircular canals, eyes and proprioceptors
10
Q
Medulla Oblongata
A
- Swollen extension of the spinal cord
- Regulates involuntary actions of the autonomic nervous system; breathing, heart rate, swallowing, vomiting and constriction of blood vessels
11
Q
Hypothalamus
A
- Controls drives, body temperature regulation and thirst
- Controls the pituitary gland
12
Q
Pons
A
- Bridge located between midbrain and medulla
13
Q
Thalamus
A
- Located below the cerebrum
- “Screens” sensory information so it can direct attention to stimuli of interest
- Relay station
