What is the test for starch?
A
- Crush grind sample
- Add iodine solution
- Look for colour change from yellow brown to blue black

What is the reducing sugars test?
A
- Crush or find sample
- Add distilled water
- Add Benedicts solution
- Place in water bath at 90 degrees for 5 minutes
- Colour change from blue to brick red precipitate

What is the test for non reducing sugars?
A
Test for reducing sugars to ensure none are present which may invalidate the result.
- Crush or grind sample
- Add distilled water
- Add HCL
- Place in water bath for a few mins to hydrolyse sample
- Add sodium hydrogen carbonate to neutralise the sample
- Add benedicts solution
- Replace into water bath for a few more mins
- Observe colour change from blue to brick red precipitate

A
- Crush or grind sample
- Add ethanol
- Add distilled water
- Cloudy white emulsion indicates a positive test for lipids

- Add biurets solution
- Colour change from blue to purple
