BIOLOGICAL MOLECULES - Lipids Flashcards
1
Q
Triglycerides vs phospholipids
A
Triglycerides = 3 fatty acids + glycerol
Phospholipids = 2 fatty acids + glycerol + phosphate group
2
Q
Formation of triglycerides
A
Condensation reaction between glycerol and 3 fatty acids
Form ester bond
3
Q
Saturated vs unsaturated fatty acids
A
Saturated = only single bonds between carbon atoms
Unsaturated = at least one db between carbon atoms
4
Q
Triglyceride properties
A
- Energy storage - large ratio of energy storing carbon-hydrogen bonds compared to carbon atoms
- Metabolic water source - they release water if oxidised
- Do not affect water potentials/osmosis - large and hydrophobic, insoluble in water
