Biological Molecules 2 Flashcards
Alternative method to measuring reducing sugar quantity other than a colorimeter
Alternative method to measuring reducing sugar quantity other than a colorimeter:
-Filter + dry precipitate
-Find mass/weight
Why is glycogen good for storage?
Glycogen is good for storage:
-It is insoluble -> does not affect water potential
-Branched -> makes molecules more compact
How can starch act as a source of energy?
Starch -> hydrolysed to glucose -> glucose can then be used in respiration
Starch molecule adaptations
Starch molecule adaptations:
-Compact
-Insoluble
-Large molecule
Cellulose molecule adaptations
Cellulose molecule adaptations:
-Long and straight chains
-Lots of microfibrils/fibres -> strengthens cell wall
How are triglycerides formed?
Formation of triglycerides:
-Formed by esterification of a glycerol with fatty acids x3
-Involves condensation reaction, removal of three water molecules
How to find percentage of lipid in plasma membrane by mass
How to find percentage of lipid in plasma membrane by mass:
-Divide mass of each lipid by total mass of all lipids
-Multiply by 100
Endopeptidase
Endopeptidases break proteins into small polypeptides by breaking the bonds in the middle
Exopeptidase
Exopeptidases break down protein but by taking single amino acids of the end.
