Biological Molecules Flashcards
Biological molecules (biomolecules)
Organic molecules contain carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Important for the survival of living cells
Carbohydrates
Made up of Carbon + hydrogen + Oxygen in ratio of 1:2:1
e.j. Glucose (simple sugar) = C6H12O6
Proteins
All proteins Contain Carbon + Hydrogen + Oxygen + Nitrogen
Fats (Lipids)
Contain Carbon + Hydrogen + Oxygen
What are carbohydrates
long chains of simple sugars. When 2 glucose molecules join together, maltose is formed. When many glucose molecules join they form cellulose, glycogen, and starch. Glucose = Reducing Sugar
What are proteins
Long chains of Amino Acids. Arranged to create proteins
What are Lipids
Made up of Fatty Acids and Glycerol. Fats as solids and Oil as liquids.. Most energetic of the 3. Twice as much energy when digested than proteins and carbohydrates.
