Biological diversity part one Flashcards
What is biology?
The study of life or living things.
What is Biological Diversity?
Variety of organisms on Earth.
What are the conditions for all living things?
- made of cells
- need energy to live
- grow and develop
- reproduce
- exchange gases
- produce wastes
- respond to their environment
- have adaptations that suit them to their environment
- cells are made of CHON (Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen)
What are adaptations?
Features that increase an organism’s chances of surviving and reproducing in a particular environment.
What is an ecosystem?
An environment where living organisms interact with the non-living components.
What are biotic factors?
- animals
- plants
- fungi
- bacteria
- protists
- insects
What are abiotic factors?
- air
- sunlight
- soil
- water
- temperature
- minerals
What is a population?
Group of an individual species which frequent a common, specific area.
What is a community?
Populations of different species that live together in the same area; essentially the entire biotic component of an ecosystem.
What is a species?
Organisms with the same basic structures that also have the ability to interbreed to produce viable offspring.
What is genetic diversity?
The result of differences within the genetic material in the cells of organisms.
What is the two name system scientists use?
Binomial Nomenclature. Genus first then species name.
Why is Latin the common language of science?
Because it is a “dead language” it is no longer evolving and no country uses it as their language.
What are the 5 kingdoms that scientists classify.
- Animalia (animals)
- Plantae (plants)
- Fungi (yeasts, moulds,mushrooms)
- Protista (mostly single-celled organisms)
- Monera (bacteria)
What is Interdependence?
Relates to how each species depends upon many other species in it’s environment.
