Bioenergetics And Exercise Metabolism Flashcards
what is bioenergetics?
the study of energy in the human body
what is metabolism?
Process in which nutrients are acquired, transported, used, and disposed of by the body
What is the aerobic system?
Theaerobic systemhas the ability to break down more than one type of fuel source. The fuels being fats, glucose, carbohydrates, protein, thissystemalso relies on the circulatorysystemto transport oxygen to muscles before it creates ATP.Aerobicmeans that the energysystemuses oxygen to function.
What is anaerobic energy?
Anaerobicexercise is any activity that breaks down glucose forenergywithout using oxygen. Generally, these activities are of short length with high intensity
What is adenosine triphosphate (ATP)?
Energy storage and transfer unit within cells.
what is anaerobic threshold?
When the body can no longer produce enough energy with normal oxygen intake
What is excess post oxygen consumption (EPOC) ?
Elevation of metabolism after exercise.
The body must metabolize additional nutrients - replenish the energy stores that have been used up; reload depletedoxygenstores in muscle and blood.
what are carbohydrates?
Organic compounds of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen which includes starches, cellulose, and sugars
what is glucose?
Absorbed and transported in the blood. Simple sugar manufactured from carbs, fat , and lesser extent protein.
what is glycogen?
complex carb molecule used to store carbs in the liver and muscle cells.
what is the oxidative system?
Theoxidative systemis also known as the Krebs cycle and the citric acid cycle. In thissystem, carbohydrates and fats are the primary energy sources converted into ATP and this process takes place in the mitochondria of the cell.
What is glycolysis
Glycolysissimply means the breakdown (lysis) of glucose and consists of a series of chemical reactions that are controlled by enzymes. they are anaerobic, moderate-to-high intensity up to 30-50 seconds
what is ATP-PC
adénosine triphosphate, phosphocreatine. Thisenergysystem provides immediateenergythrough the breakdownofthese stored highenergyphosphates. Lasts 10 to 15 seconds
what is the mitochondria?
The “powerhouses of the cell”, that’s how many people knowmitochondria. The parts of cells that turn sugars, fats and proteins that we eat, into forms of chemical energy that the body can use to carry on living.
