Bioenergetics Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
When carbon dioxide and water are coverted to glucose using light energy.
What is the photosynthesis word equasion?
Carbon dioxide + water > glucose + oxygen
What is the balanced photosynthesis symbol equation?
6CO2 + 6H2O > C6H12O6 + 6O2
What 5 things do plants use the glucose made in photosynthesis for?
1- Respiration
2- Making cellulose eg. strong plant cell walls
3- Making amino acids which are made into proteins
4- Stored as oil or fats; lipids for storing in seeds
5- Stored as starch; stored in the roots stems and leaves ready for when photosynthesis isn’t taking place
What 3 factors affect the rate of photosynthesis?
1- Temperature
2- Light intensity
3- CO2 concentration
What is a limiting factor?
Something that can slow down a reaction
What does the term aerobic mean?
Oxygen is present
What does the term anaerobic mean?
Oxygen is not present
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
glucose + oxygen > carbon dioxide + water
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?
glucose > actic acid
When does anaerobic respiration take place?
During vigourous exercise
What is your metabolism?
the total of all reactions that happen in a cell or the body
What is respiration?
The trasfer of energy from the breakdown of glucose
Why do we need to respire?
It transfers energy to cells so that they can carry out their functions
