Bioenergetics Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
A chemical reaction which takes place in plants, it turns carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen.
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water –> Glucose + Oxygen
What is the glucose made used for?
respiration
stored as starch, fat or ols used to produce cellulose.
What are the limiting factors of photosynthesis?
Temperature, light intensity and carbon dioxide concentration.
What happens if the temperature in photosynthesis gets too hot?
The enzymes which catalyse the reaction become denatured.
What happens if you increase the light intensity in photosynthesis?
It increases the rate of reaction as there is more energy to carry out more reactions.
What happens if you increase carbon dioxide concentration in photosynthesis?
It increases the rate of reaction as there are more reactants available.
What is the inverse square law?
The intensity of light is inversely proportional to the square distance from the source.
What is respiration?
The chemical reaction which occurs inside the mitochondria of all living cells to release energy for living functions and processes.
What is the word equation of respiration (aerobic)?
glucose + oxygen –> carbon dioxide + water + ATP
What is the word equation of respiration (anaerobic)?
Glucose –> ethanol + carbon dioxide + energy
What happens in your body when you exercise?
The heart pumps faster
the breathing rate and breath volume increase to supply more oxygen to the muscles.
What is Metabolism?
The combination of all the reactions in a cell or in the body.
What is oxygen debt?
the amount of oxygen required by the body to convert the built-up lactic acid back into glucose.
