Bioenergetics Flashcards
Bioenergetics
Describes how living systems capture, transform and use energy to do work and stay alive
How is energy for metabolism measured?
Equilibrium thermodynamics
What is the equation for thermodynamics?
E=Q-W
What is a bomb calorimeter?
The most direct way of measuring energy content by measuring energy produced combusting or oxidising
What is enthalpy?
A measure of the heat change during a reaction at constant pressure and volume with equation E=HxH H=enthalpy
What is free (useful) energy?
Used to drive biochemical reactions (G)
What is entropy (useless) energy?
Not used for biochemical reactions (S)
What is the Gibbs-Helmholtz equation?
G=H-TxS
When are free energy changes most easily obtained?
When a reaction is approaching equilibrium
What is protein synthesis driven by?
ATP and GTP
Non-equilibrium thermodynamics
Energy and matter can only flow through an open system
