Bioenergetics Flashcards
What is the First Law of Thermodynamics?
Energy can neither be created nor destroyed
What sign does an exothermic reaction have?
For enthalpy
Negative
What is the Second Law of Thermodynamics?
Universe always tends towards increasing disorder-Entropy
What makes a spontaneous chemical reaction
Delta G= Delta H (enthalpy)-T X delta S (entropy)
Gibbs Free Energy
What type of reaction is endergonic?
One where the products free energy is more than the reactants
Does not occur spontaneously
Delta G naught (standard change in free energy)
Energy change when reactants and products are at a conc. of 1mol/L-useful in comparing the energy changes from different reactions
Negative Delta G
- Exergonic
- Spontaneously
Positive Delta G
- Endergonic
- Not spontaneous
Delta G is zero
Reaction is at equilibrium
Are delta G pathways additive?
Yes-as long as the sum of delta G of the individual reactions are negative
Keq >1
Forward direction: Negative #
Keq <1
Reverse, positive #
Keq=1
Equilibrium, G=0
