Biodiversity key terms Flashcards
Biodiversity
a measure of the variation of different species in a habitat
Habitat
where an organism lives
Species
a group of organisms that can freely interbreed to produce fertile offspring
allele
a version of a gene
- its a form of gene that is either longer, shorter or of a different sequence
locus
the position of that gene on a chromosome
polymorphic gene locus
a locus that has more than one alleles in more than 1 percent of the populations
Simpson’s index of biodiversity
a measure of the diversity of a habitat
species evenness
a measure of how evenly represented the species are
species richness
a measure of how many different species are present
climate change
significant long-lasting changes in weather patterns
monoculture
a crop consisting of one strain of one species
keystone species
a species that has a disproportionate effect on its environment relative to its abundance
soil depletion
the loss of soil fertility caused by removal of minerals by continuous cropping
What is species biodiversity?
The range of different species within a habitat
What is habitat biodiversity?
The range of habitats that different organisms live in
