Biodiversity Flashcards
What is the significance of biodiversity
Maintaining ecosystems and balance of organisms in which may all rely on each other, fungi and microorganisms help decompose dead plants and animals which then return to the soil for nutrients
what happens before a major project takes place
Environmental impact assessment is undertaken in order to see the effects of biodiversity on the area
What is habitat biodiversity
number of different habitats found within each area, a habitat can support a number of species, UK has a large habitat biodiversity compared to antartica
species biodiversity
species richness- number of different species in an area
species evenness- comparison of the numbers of individuals of each species in a community
What is genetic biodiversity
variety of genes that make up a species. Humans have 25,000 genes but some species have 400,000 genes
What is sampling
Taking measurements of a limited number of individual organisms present in a particular area
