biochemistry Flashcards
1
Q
what causes nephrotic syndrome?
A
the basement membrane in the glomerulus becomes highly permeable to protein, allowing proteins to leak from the blood into the urine.
2
Q
who gets nephrotic syndrome?
A
children aged 2 to 5
3
Q
what is the presentation of nephrotic syndrome?
A
frothy urine, generalised oedema and pallor
4
Q
what test results are seen in nephrotic syndrome?
A
Low serum albumin
High urine protein content (>3+ protein on urine dipstick)
5
Q
what is microalbuminuria?
A
excretion of albumin in abnormal quantities but still below the limit of protein detection by dipstick
earliest expression of diabetic nephropathy
