Q

Why are cells small?

A

The process of cellular metabolism sets limits on the size of cells.
Cells are so little, so they can maximize their ratio of surface area to volume.
A higher ratio accelerates the exchange of materials into and out of the cells.

Q

Similarities and differences between plant animal and bacterial cells

A

Intro
Plant animal, and bacterial cells share structures such as the cell membrane, ribosomes, and DNA. They all carry out functions to survive and pass on their genes.
Aside from their basic similarities, these cells have some drastic jurassic differences.

Big
Plants and animals are multi-cellular organisms composed of eukaryotic cells, while bacteria are single-cell prokaryotic organisms.

Structure
Eukaryotic cells of a plant or animal each include a nucleus containing DNA
The cells also contain membrane-bound organelles, such as endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria.
A bacterial cell keeps it’s DNA in the cytoplasm, without a nucleus or organelles.

Division
Bacteria cells divide by way of binary fission and are asexual. Eukaryotes, however, divide via mitosis and reproduce sexually.
