Bio test Flashcards
What are the two types of transport
Active and Passive transport
What are the subdivisions of active transport
Molecular transport
And bulk transport
What is bulk transport
It’s moves large molecules through the membrane with exocytosis things from the inside to the outside and endocytosis which moves things from the outside of the cell into the cell
What is molecular transport
A type of active transport that uses a sodium or potassium pump to move things through the membrane and also moves against the concentration gradient ( low to high concentration)
What is the difference between active and passive transport
Active transport uses atp and energy
What is diffusion
Diffusion is the tendency of particles to spread out and let things that are small and nonpolar pass through the membrane
How can water pas through the cell membrane
Water uses facilitated diffusion to go through the cell membrane even though it’s polar because of aquaporins which is a channel protein
Note: because we need oxygen to make energy it wants to enter the cell and there is a high concentration of co2 in the cell so it wants to get out through it the process of cellular respiration
What is passive transport
It helps move molecules through the membrane and does not use energy
Solute
Dissolved substances
Solution
Mixture of dissolved substance in a liquid
Hypertonic
Above strength solution
Cell gets smaller because water leaves cell
Solvent
Liquid that dissolve something
Hypotonic solution
Below strength solution
Cell gets larger because water enters
Why did the egg deflate a little bit after sitting in the corn syrup over night?
Because there is a higher concentration of solutes in sugar so it water leaves the egg so the concentration of solutes is equal
