BIO LAB PRACTICAL Flashcards
Hypothesis
A general explanation for a phenomenon
Prediction
A statement that describes how the dependent variable will be affected by the treatments if the hypothesis is supported
Mean (or average)
the sum of the individual data points divided by the sample size
Standard deviation
a measure of the amount of variation in data values around the mean
Null hypothesis
always states that there will be no effect of your treatment on your dependent variable
Independent variable
refers to a condition within an experiment that is manipulated by the scientist
dependent variable
refers to an event or outcome of an experiment that might be affected by the manipulation of the independent variable
negative control
the control group is exposed to all of the experimental conditions except for the actual treatment
positive control
is run as a parallel experiment and generally involves the use of an alternative treatment that the researcher knows will have an effect on the dependent variable
p-value for a t-test
probablility that the difference in your treatment means is due to chance and not due to the effect of the treatments
p-value threshold
p>0.05 means that the null hypothesis is accepted
p<0.05 null rejected, support for alternative hypothesis
