Bio Lab 10 - Mollusks Flashcards
1
Q
Phylum Mollusca
A
4 Part Body Plan
4 Classes
Includes snails, squids, octopus, clam, ec
2
Q
Mollusk Body Plan
A
- Mantle: Secretes a shell (if have one)
- Mantle Cavity: houses ctenidia
- Ctenidia: absorbs water, nutrients, gill-like - Foot: locomotion and prey capture
- Visceral Mass: internal organs and coelom (space around organs)
3
Q
Classes of Phylum Mollusca
A
Polyplacophora- Chitins
Bivalvia - 2 valves (clams)
Gastropoda - stomach feet (snails)
Cephalopoda - head feet (squid, octopus)
4
Q
Class Polyplacophoroa
A
of Phylum Mollusca
- 8 CaCO3 plates
- covered in colored membranes
- see picture of body struture
5
Q
Class Bivalvia
A
- 2 Doors (like shells)
- scallops, oysters, clams
- filter feeders
- water flows over gills then anus
- clam dissection
6
Q
Class Gastropoda
A
- stomach feet
- snails, slugs, nudibranches
- see snail reproduction
- radula for scraping food
- snail dissection
7
Q
Snail Reproduction
A
- “Male” shoots Love Dart out of Common Gonopore (CG)
- Love dart penetrates Dart Sac
- Male’s Flagellum leaves out CG and into CG of female
- Flagellum deliver Sperm Packet
- Packet travels up Spermathecal Duct
- Packet stored in Spermatheca
- If female chooses, the sperm is wrapped around eggo yolk, surrounded by egg white and shell and dropped out CG to environment
- Egg and sperm made in Ovitestes
8
Q
Class Cephalopoda
A
-squid, cuttlefish, octopus Squid: -8 arms, 2 tentacles -Jet propulsion through mantle cavity -Ink sac smoke screen Chromatophores: change color and texture Squid dissection
9
Q
Dissections of Mollusks
A
- Clam: Class Bivalvia
- Snail: Class Gastropoda
- Squid: Class Cephalopoda
