- Involves the use of a substitute drug
- Help to elevate symptoms associated with withdrawal
- Releases nicotine that desensitises the brain nicotine receptors
- Smoking becomes dissatisfying

- Stimulates the same receptor sites as heroin but in a mild way
- Stops the cravings, without the ‘high’ so is less appealing
- Reward pathway is not activated

Found that inmates who used methadone used none or less heroin than before

- Its an antagonist drug that blocks opioid receptors without producing an affect itself
- Reducing the rewarding properties of the activity
