Bio Ch6 Flashcards
Lipids:
Insoluble compounds
A lipid containing a hydrocarbon chain bonded to a carboxyl group
Fatty acid
Saturated and unsaturated bonds
1) consists of only single bonds
2) consists of >1 double bonds
How many rings does steroid have
4 hydro carbon structure
Micelles
Interact with water
Permeability
A structures tendency to allow a given substance to pass through it
Diffusion
The spontaneous movement of a substance from one reigón to another
Passive transport
Diffusion of a substance across a membrane
Hypertonic
When the solution outside the vesicle has a higher concentration of solutes than the interior
Hypotonic
When the solution outside the vesiclehas a LOWER concentration of solutes than the interior
Isotonic
Both solute concentrations are equal
Cell-like vesicle structures that harbor nucleiC acids
Protocells
Difference between active and passive transport in diffusion?
Passive transport (diffusion and facilitated) doesn’t require energy, active transport requires energy as it is transporting molecules against the current
In facilitated passive transport, what is the difference between channel and carrier mediated diffusion?
Channel mediated transport there is a channel protein to transport, carrier diffusion uses a carrier protein
Water moves from areas of ? Concentration to areas of ? Concentration during osmosis
Low concentration to high concentration
