Bio Ch 3 Flashcards
Tiny molecule with a central carbon and amino/carboxyl groups that make up proteins are
Amino acids
Amino acids are made up of these four parts.
Hydrogen atoms, amino group (Nh 2)carboxyl group, and R group
What r groups are hydrophilic? Hydrophobic?
Polar + electrically charged r groups are hydrophilic, non-polar groups are hydrophobic
What does a negative charged r-group mean? Positive?
Negative charged r-groups are acidic, positive charges are basic
What does it mean when a r-group has no charge?
If containing an oxygen atom, it is polar covalent. If no oxygen, the group is nonpolar
Peptide bonds
Result in a condensation reaction between two amino acids.
Difference between oligopeptide and polypeptide
Oligopeptide’S are polymers with < 50 amino acids• polypeptides,are >50 amino acids,
Draw out primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary structures
✓
What are prions
Protiens that form an infectious abnormal shape
Catalysis
The speeding up of a chemical reaction presumed by enzymes
What are the functions of proteins (6)
Catalysis,movement, structures signaling transport defense
Subunits of macromolecules
Monomers
Electrically charged side chains are
Hydrophilic acidic or basic
Polar side chains are
hydrophilic ‘ no charge+ oxygen
Non polar side chains are
Hydrophobic no charge and no oxygen
