Bio Ch 2 Flashcards
What are the differences between cations, ions, and anions?
Ions are fully charged atoms/molecules, cations and anions are partially charged
Compounds are
when atoms of different elements form a bond
What’s the difference between polar and non-polar covalent bonds?
Polar bonds do not share elections equally while non-polar bonds do.
What are ionic bonds?
The transfer of electrons
Covalent bonds
When two atoms share electrons and turned to a molecule
What is a dalton?
A unit of measure named after John dalton who formed the modern atomic theory.
What is an atom and what are the four main atoms that make up most of all living matter? %?
Atom is the smallest unit of matter. Carbon. Nitrogen. Hydrogen. Oxygen 96%
Elements are defined as
Substances that consist entirely of a single atom type
Chemical bonds
Attractions that bind atoms together
What is an isotope?
When the element has differing numbers of protons and neutrons
Difference between polar and non-polar?
Polar- electrons shared unevenly
Non-polar electrons shared evenly
Difference between cohesion and adhesion
Cohesion is molecules sticking together
Adhesion causes water molecules to stick to something else.
