Where do gallstones form?
In the gall bladder
What are gallstones made up of?
Cholesterol
Bilirubin
How do gallstones reach the bile duct?
Are moved out from gallbladder into cystic then bile duct when gall bladder contracts
How does bile duct obstruction by gallstones present?
Biliary colic
Post-hepatic jaundice
What is biliary colic?
RUQ pain, radiates to tip of right scapula or shoulder
constant for approximately 6 hours (not an actual colic)
What can increase the risk of bile duct obstruction by already existing gallstones, biliary colic?
Eating a fatty meal
What is a complication of cystic duct obstruction by a gallstone?
Acute cholecystitis
What is acute cholecystitis?
Inflammation of the gall bladder
caused by infection of the gall bladder
What is the microbe responsible for causing acute cholecystitis?
E.coli
How does acute cholecystitis present?
Biliary colic that’s worse
Fever
Post-hepatic jaundice
What is a complication of bile duct obstruction?
Cholangitis
What is cholangitis?
Inflammation of the bile duct
caused by infection of the bile duct
What microbe is responsible for infection of the bile duct?
E. coli
How does cholangitis present?
