3 ways students view the Gospel Project

- assignment- “i’ll do it, but don’t plan to get anything out of it, going through the motions
- spiritual discipline- “i’m going to make this a part of my relationship w/ God”
hagah’s relation to the Gospel Project
we will get more out of it if we approach the Word of God with hagah, we want to actually get something out of it and not just go through the motions
3 offices woven through Old Testamen and fulfilled through Jesus
- Prophet
- Priest
- King
prophet
office: to speak the Word of God
-confronts sin
-commands repentance
-cries out the truth of God
greatest Old Testament prophet
Moses
“the Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. you must listen to him.”
importance of prophet scripture
why was the Old Testament prophet connected to the Word of God?
because his ministry was to proclaim the Word of God
what set Jesus apart from other religious leaders of the time?
He spoke from His own authority

incarnation scripture
priest
office: humbly stand between God and people as a mediator
-advocate

“for there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Jesus Christ.”
Jesus as our priest/ mediator scripture
why is Jesus our high priest?
because his sacrifice is superior to all others
“unlike the other high priests, He does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for His own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins and for all when He offered Himself.”
Jesus’ sacrifice > all others scripture
“otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. but He has appeared once and for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of Himself.”
Jesus’ sacrifice > all others scripture
why do we pray in Jesus’ name?
because his intercession as our priest makes both our worship and prayer possible
role of the Old Testament King
to rule of the nation
what does Jesus rule over as king?
both material and spiritual worlds, all of our lives
tri- perspective view of Jesus
Jesus as Prophet, Priest, and King
what Jesus as prophet does
confronts us and calls us to repent
what Jesus as priest does
comforts us and saves us from our sin
what Jesus as king does
commands us to relinquish the authority over our lives
legalism
prophet + king - priest
view:
-we feel like we need to earn his favor
-bold, prophetic Jesus who calls us to repent
-view God as cold and distant and waiting for us to mess up
-relate to him through pride or despair
moralism
prophet + priest - king
view:
-de-emphasize role of king (we are our own king)
-know he speaks truth and loves us
result:
-lives look like average non-christians
-double life of hypocrisy
liberalism
priest + king - prophet
view:
-jesus doesn’t require us to repent
result:
-believe that sinful behaviors and beliefs are blessed
