What is the boat crew’s firefighting response activities?
Handle them with all available means in accordance with the required Boat Crew Positions
What is the Coast Guard’s firefighting policy?
SMCs may direct firefighting to save life, however, generally will not be approved for saving property.
Discuss the MSAP
- Provide timely assistance
- Determine distress
- Provide MARB
- Help Coordinate salvage
What is the General Salvage Policy?
- May refloat small boats with D8 concurrence
- Unit must be capable
- Owner agrees to the efforts
- Presents no unduly hazards
- May allow the next tide to refloat vessel, help set anchors, evacuate passengers, determine vessels seaworthiness
What are some considerations for mission planning when conducting rescue and assistance operations?
- First responsibility is to save lives
- Be cautious of sinking vessels
- Be familiar with towing limitations
- ## Be familiar with MSAP

- Marine Mammal Protection Act
- Endangered Species Act
- ## Be familiar with AOR requirements
What are the objectives of SAR communications
- Obtain information on a distress incident and disseminiat it promptly to all units and commands capable of providing assistance.
- Closely coordinate participants during the SAR operation in order to save the lives and property involved.
(Info Gathering, Dissemination, Coordination)
What are the SRU communication organizations?
- SMC selects frequencies, informs SRU, and establishes communication with parent agencies
- OSC controls communication on scene objects subject to the instructions directed by SMC
What are the unit initial actions in SAR communications
- Dispatch SRU or request other facilities
- Act in accordance with MSAP
- Notify OPCON and other agencies for direction
What is the DATUM deployment schedule?
- First SRU on scene should deploy a datum upon arrival.
Define the following SAR Operation Procedures:
- Family member participation in the search
- Tresspassing on private property
- Searches for bodies
- Family member participation - Should be limited to save the potential impact of witnessing the distress site.
- Tresspasing - Units should obtain permission from owner, if not possible, then the SMC must grant permission and only when saving life can immediate action be taken.
- Searches for bodies - CG not required to search. May assist other agencies.
