What caused of BPH?
unknown caused but enlargement of the prostate gland
What will client feel and see when urinate?
Straining to urinate, decreased u/o, feeling they have to go all the time, dribbling urine
Who usually prone to BPH?
Men usually age 50, Obese or have metabolic syndrome
How to assess BPH?
Digital rectal exam, blood test (prostate specific antigen PSA), urine test
What is the surgical tx for BPH?
Transuretral resection of the prostate (TURP)
How to perform TURP?
Scope goes through the penis and removes parts of the prostate
What kind of catheter client will get before the TURP procedure?
Three-way (lumen) indwelling catheter
What will the Dr order to be done after TURP?
Continuous Bladder Irrigation (CBI)
What is the purpose of CBI?
To reduce the risk of clot formation and maintain indwelling catheter patency
What type of fluid using to irrigate the bladder?
Isotonic sterile saline solution
What color of the urine should be?
Light pink during the procedure that turn to clear
What medication will give if the bladder spasm occurs?
Belladonna/opium suppositories or oxybutynin
What position is the best after TURP?
Lying flat because sitting up puts pressure on the bladder
What Post OP meds prescribed to the client?
Finasteride it blocks a hormone that causes the prostate to enlarge
