Benign mucosal diseases Flashcards
give the 7 categories of the surgical sieve
congenital
traumatic
autoimmune
metabolic
infective
inflammatory
idiopathic
name 2 congenital benign mucosal findings
leukoedema
fordyce spots - ectopic sebacous glands
give 6 traumatic benign mucosal findings
erosions/ulcers - should resolve in 14 days (aphthous, traumatic)
frictional keratosis - cheek biting, linea alba
polyps - sessile (broad based) or pedunculated (small stalk)
amalgam tattoos - biopsy as looks similar to melanoma
denture induced hyperplasia
mucoceles - mucous extravasation cyst, cyst of minor salivary gland due to damaged duct
give 2 fungal infective benign mucosal findings
acute pseudomembranous candidiasis (thrush) - wipes off
candida leukoplakia - extends from commisures, does not wipe off, if doesn’t resolve in 2 weeks then biopsy
give 2 viral infective benign mucosal findings
papilloma - finger like projections, low risk HPV
secondary herpes - reactivation of latent herpes, tingling sensation prior to development
give 3 inflammatory benign mucosal findings
geographic tongue - vitb issue predisposes, LA or steroid MW in severe cases
lichenoid reactivations - reaction to metal or medication, biopsy to diagnose
epulis - fibrous or pyogenic granuloma (more vascular), pyogenic associated w/ pregnancy
give a metabolic benign mucosal finding - what is deficient?
addisons - cortisol and aldosterone deficiency, skin & oral pigmentation, biopsy to confirm not melanoma
melanotic macule
round brown/black area on lip or mucosal surface
flat not raised
looks like freckle
trauma or idiopathic cause
biopsy to confirm not melanoma
give an autoimmune benign mucosal finding
lichen planus - white lace patter, affects all buccal mucosa, bilateral, biopsy, possible malignant transformation so must monitor, looks similar to lichenoid
give idiopathic benign mucosal finding
lipoma - benign mesenchymal neoplasm, made of fat cells, looks like a fibroepithelial polyp, yellow
