Kerfing

A
  • A series of parallel saw cuts are made on one side of the material to be bent enabling it to compress on that side

Steam bending

A
  • Lengths of wood are placed in a steam chest with saturated steam at 100°c
  • The supply of heat and moisture makes the timber soft and pliable
  • Time: 1 hour per 25mm

Laminating

A
  • Layers of wood are glued and clamped in a jig
  • Wood takes required form
  • Laminating with vacuum bag or straps as a method of pressing agains the former
  • Sealed end, glued laminations, former, g clamps, base board
  • OR waxed hardwood, clamping blocks, vice/sash cramps
