Q

How does operant conditioning affect relationship formation?

A

Relationship could be rewarded e.g. attention/compliments. Therefore behaviour will be repeated (positive reinforcement).

Being in a relationship will help us avoid feelings of loneliness and rejection. Therefore being in a relationship will be inforced ( negative reinforcement).

We may feel punished for being alone e.g. being excluded from couple only events. Therefore being single will be punished ( punishment).

Q

How can classical conditioning affect relationship formation?

A

We like people who we associate with pleasant experiences e.g. if we are in a positive mood when we meet someone - we like them.

A neutral stimulus ( someone you have never met) can become positively valued because of their association with a positive event. E.g. falling in love with someone at a party.
