Behavioural Contemporary Debate- In School Flashcards
What did McAllister et Al do (1969)?
Looked at high school English classes.
Increased teacher praise and increased teacher disapproval.
Inappropriate talking from students decreased.
What did Le Francois say?
Teachers should maximise pleasant stimuli in classrooms e.g. smells nice, not freezing.
Decrease negative stimuli e.g. mould
Students would have more positive feelings about the work environment so behaviour and academic performance will improve.
If you are constantly rewarding students with extrinsic rewards, what negative impact could this have?
May reduce their internal drive and motivation to learn.
What did Lepper et Al do? ( 1973)?
Asked nursery children to draw some pictures.
When children were promised a reward for their pictures, they spent half as much time drawing as the children who were not promised a reward.
This tells us that extrinsically rewarding children destroyed their own motivation.
Learned helplessness- Dweck (1975)
Found that children who were praised for doing good work in a maths test did worse on later and more difficult tests than children who had been told they were lazy.
The group that had been called lazy had developed task persistence where as the praised group gave up easily.
This shows that rewards don’t always lead to better performance.
