Why do common punishments not work by themselves?

A

Q

What did Gill do ( 1998)?

A

Asked parents to encourage chore completion by giving pocket money ( positive reinforcement) or postponement of pocket money ( punishment)

It was concluded that these strategies were successful as children increased their chores and ended up performing 20% of household chores.

Q

What did Morris say ( 2014).

A

Claimed that the naughty step can have long term emotional effects.

The naughty step relies on children being able to reflect and understanding their own feelings.

Without help with their feelings, the naughty step may ultimately have a negative effect on development.

Q

Why are conditioning techniques unlikely to be as successful as promised?

A

Parents need to be calm and consistent when applying techniques such as the naughty step.

However, when people get stressed they don’t remain calm and consistent.
